Tranmere Rovers v Boreham Wood, by Evelyn Hignett

On a sunny August Saturday afternoon as 4295 fans watched, the players began optimistically warming up. Micky Mellon made three changes to the team to try and get their second win this season.

In the first half, Mitch Duggan and James Norwood both came close to scoring but at half time the score remained nil-nil. In the second half at 53mins, referee Paul Marsden blew his whistle for a foul by Scott Davis and Boreham scored their penalty taken by Andrade.

At 69mins Boreham Wood scored again by Balanta to make the score for Boreham Wood 2 nil. This drove Tranmere on to boost their confidence and Andy Cook scored in the 82nd minute.

Andy Mangan scored at the very last minute to take the final score to 2 all. Frustrated Tranmere received yellow cards for McNulty, Norburn and Cook. Substitutions were made for Tranmere with Alavi swapped for Cook at 57 minutes, Jennings changed for Mangan at 67 minutes and Hughes came off for Harris at 72 minutes. Interestingly, both goals were scored by substitutes.

In his post match interview, Mickey Mellon said "with 20 minutes to go we showed quality." Clearly disappointed with the referee's decisions, he also said "for the game I love, it wasn't the 22 players on the pitch that dictated the game, it was the ref that made all the bad decisions not the players.
